Humanities are disciplines in academics which deal with human condition by effectively using analytical, speculative and critical approaches to the subject. The study of humanities is an old discipline and originated in the time of the ancient Greeks where it formed one of the basic foundations of its citizens’ education. During the Roman era the civilization developed and nurtured seven liberal arts subjects such as grammar, logic, rhetoric, geometry, arithmetic, astronomy and music. These subjects formed what the Romans considered to be basic in regards to the humanities. Humanities began to evolve as the ages progressed forward in time and beginning in the Renaissance era a considerable number of the humanists began proposing that the subjects under discussion should be studied more than they were practiced. This evolution of the subjects would continue until the 20th century when several groups would start to challenge the humanities experts and delegated authorities to redefine the set fields of study involving the humanities insisting that they be more rational and realistic.

Today, the following are considered to be the involved fields in the humanities area:

Classical study – This is considered the foundation of all humanities. It deals with antiquity and the classical ideas of many early cultures mainly of the Greek and Roman traditions. In addition it touches upon the major classic ethnicities of the Indian, Chinese and Egyptian civilization.

History – This field deals with the interpretation of past records for various societies, human beings or events. Focus upon this field is intended to acquire information concerning the past as well as to develop a means of historical thinking.

Languages – This particular field deals with the classics but revolves around the various languages. This does not include linguistics because it is already a social science and not considered a part of the humanities. Directly related to language is the subjects of literature, history and philosophy.

Law – This area of study defines the rules and enforcement of established norms of public behavior.

Literature – This field of study tackles the area of prose and poetry revolving around a particular topic. It maybe or may not be of a national nature.

Performing Arts – Now we have the entertaining area of study which embraces things such as juggling, comedy, dance, music, opera, magic, acrobatics, film as well as marching. Performing arts makes use of the body to create or exhibit artistry and creativity.

Philosophy – This field generally deals with problems regarding matters of existence, truth, justification, justice, as well as the right and wrong of life.

Religion – Religion deals with the different religions and the history and origin of each.

Visual Arts – This includes the subjects of painting and drawing.

Today, many humanists in the US had agreed and included some of these fields in the curriculum of most of the current college students. With the rise of information technology the humanities and its components are again subjected to another evolution within the digital era.
